Rudyard Kipling once said “He travels fastest who travels alone.” That became Sheetz’s mantra. I won’t stop playing it for at least an hour.” And I know this about myself now-I work well with puzzles and pottery and games like Simon or Bop It. I would just sit there for hours and do them. And I never once looked at the box for examples of what the picture looked like on these puzzles. “And I spent a lot of time with my grandma, and she would just give me jigsaw puzzles all the time. “I was just more comfortable around my family and parents,” she sighs. “But when it was music time and they brought out the guitar, I knew every song, and they were like, ‘Wow! She really loves music time!’”Īround her Placerville, California homestead, Sheetz was encouraged to express herself-which she did, by singing along to Miami Sound Machine and Disney soundtrack ditties, of all things. I just didn’t speak until there was something necessary to be said, I guess.” In grade school, she became known as “a total creeper,” she adds-a shadowy student always skulking around the perimeter but never contributing much. And that kind of lasted for…I dunno…for a long time, until high school, actually. And for a long while, I liked to organize the bookshelves in my classroom, so the teachers all thought that I was a little strange, because I just didn’t talk that much. “I was more of an observer than a talker. “I was kind of a weirdo, and I don’t really know why,” the singer can now readily admit. But a showbiz career was the last thing Sheetz had on her mind as a shy loner of a kid. The cinematic, Fleetwood Mac-sleek sound this keyboardist/guitarist arrived at with her three co-vocalists-Robbie Arnett, Graham Fink and Andrew Heringer-might have coalesced on their eponymous 2012 debut and its sunny singles “1957” and “Don’t You Give Up On Me.” But it definitely gelled on dreamy new tracks like “Heartless,” “White Lies,” “Save Yourself,” and a smoke-wisped “Lonely Eyes,” under the auspices of Sia/Ellie Goulding producer Jesse Shatkin, and backed by legendary drummer Joey Waronker. And, while they still utilize their multiple male/female lead vocals, especially those of Marlana Sheetz and Robbie Arnett, Milo Greene's streamlined, early-'80s, Moroder-soaked atmosphere works best when Sheetz is at the mike, applying her burnished, resonant coo to cuts like "White Lies," "Heartless," and "Lie to Me." Of course, Arnett, with his throaty, sandpaper voice, along with the other male members of the band, can be heard throughout the album and the juxtaposition between Sheetz and her bandmates certainly adds a tangible layer of drama to Control. For Marlana Sheetz, it’s been a long, strange trip leading to Control, the sophomore set from her oddly dubbed California combo Milo Greene. Think artists like the xx and Jessie Ware, and you're fairly close the the sound Milo Greene achieve here. Clearly, if the group's touchstones for the first album were the multiple harmonies of Fleet Foxes and the frenetic Afro-pop of Vampire Weekend, then Control is all icy R&B and sharp-edged, '80s-influenced post-punk. In some ways, the move brings to mind the stylistic change that occurred in bands like Jefferson Airplane and Fleetwood Mac as they transitioned from the acoustic-, folk-, and blues-influenced style of '60s and '70s rock to the synth-heavy, image-conscious aesthetic of the '80s. Working with producer/drummer Joey Waronker ( Beck, Paramore) and engineer Jesse Shatkin ( Kylie Minogue, Sia), Milo Greene have crafted an inspired collection of songs that touch upon such influences as Giorgio Moroder-esque synth pop, modern chillwave-infused R&B, and experimental post-punk. The album follows up the group's self-titled 2012 debut, and finds the previously introspective and folky five-member Los Angeles unit moving in a more sonically adventurous, rhythmically varied direction. The sophomore full-length album from California's Milo Greene, 2015's Control, provides an excellent showcase for the group's melodic and moody pop sound. In this article, I’m referring to Lightroom Classic.Įthics statement: a copy of Luminar was sent to us for review purposes. The recent CC is cloud-based and cross-device compatible (desktop, tablet, smartphone), whereas Classic CC is designed for Desktop use and is the version we’ve known for all these years. Note: Lightroom exists in two forms nowadays. Now that the app is more mature and has its own library system, I decided to give it another look and see how it compares to Lightroom. At the time, it was a promising “cheap and powerful” photo editor but was lacking too many things to be a practical replacement for other applications. I had the chance to test the first version of Skylum (ex MacPhun) Luminar two years ago. While excellent alternatives such as Aperture have disappeared, others have emerged along with many powerful features. Over the last couple of years though, I’ve realised that the competition has intensified: there is now more choice than ever. And working with other Adobe software applications such as Photoshop and Premiere has certainly helped me keep faith in the company for as long as I have. In a way, this is the best compliment one can give a product. I haven’t looked back since, not necessarily because I believe Lightroom is the absolute best, but because I got so accustomed to it that I wasn’t interested in trying anything else. It was when I bought my first DSLR, the Nikon D90, and I was looking for a powerful software to sort and edit all my photos. I opened Adobe Lightroom for the first time ten years ago. However, note that this method requires you to create a Gmail account. When you need to create a new account, after tapping "Sign in" or "Add account," tap "Create account," then follow the on-screen steps. If you want to use another Google account, tap the drop-down, and either choose the other account or select "Add account." If you had previously signed into your Google account on other Google services, such as through YouTube, Hangouts, Chrome, Google Drive, or the Google app, it might show your account name and email address along with "Confirm" instead of "Sign in" options, so select that. Tap on "Sign in to back up" or "Sign in," depending on if you're backing up right away or not, and select "Continue" when prompted to allow Google Photos to use for the sign in process. If you do not yet have a Google account, you can create one in a second. As long as you have a Google account, be it with Gmail or without, you'll still get that 15 GB of free storage or unlimited storage when allowing photo compression. When signing in, it could either be the Gmail credentials you have or just the Google account credentials if you signed up with Google using a third-party email address. Step 3: Create or Sign in to Your Google Account If you already have the app, make sure it's updated to the latest version. Also give it access to send you notifications, if you want, which is not necessary. Step 1: Install or Update Google PhotosĪfter downloading Google Photos from the App Store, launch the app, and tap on "Allow" when it prompts you to give it access to photos on your device. Any photos and videos in the " Hidden" or " Recently Deleted" albums will not be backed up or even appear in Google Photos. The first sector of the active partion is actually sector 63 of the partition as the first sector contains a redundant copy of the MBR and sectors 2 through 62 are normally empty (the remainder of the first cylinder). The FA instruction is disable interrupts, 33 C0 is XOR AX,AX The first two bytes usually indicate the MBR version:ģ3 C0. It closely resembles the above except that an extended instruction is used to copy the first sector of the active partion to avoid the cylinder 1024 limitation. The most common is the MBR used by Windows 98 and ME. It requires that the first sector of the active partition must be at or under cylinder 1024 as the standard INT 13h Read function is used to copy that sector to location 7C00h (the INT 13h BIOS interrupt limits cylinders to 0 to 1023, sectors to 1 to 63 and heads 1 to 15, 8455716864 bytes, 8.4 GB). The above description is for the MBR of a hard drive initialized with the DOS and Windows 95(A) FDISK. The MBR may be of one of the several standard versions or a customization. If no bootable partition is found or the partition marked active does not contain an operating system, an error message is displayed using INT 10. The relocation is necessary as the code next checks the partition table (64 bytes near the end of the MBR) for the first partition that is marked active, the first sector of which is then copied to location 7C00h and executed. The MBR code then first copies itself to location 0600h (1536 decimal) and continues execution with a jump to location 061Dh. It is then executed by a jump to it with the CPU instruction: JMP 0000:7C00 The motherboard completes a POST (power on self test) then the BIOS copies the MBR of the drive to memory location 7C00h (31744 decimal). If formatted as a hard drive they contain both an MBR and a boot record, if as a floppy, just a boot record. USB flash drives may also feature an MBR. It contains the boot loader code and the MPT (Master Partition Table). The MBR (Master Boot Record) is the first sector of a hard drive. The brownies are ready when a toothpick stuck halfway between the edge and the center comes out fairly clean or just a few crumbs. Add the melted chocolate, fold in the flour, nuts and chopped Frango mints. There are no leaveners, so the egg mixture accounts for any lift in the batter. It does help to have a mixer since the recipe calls for whipping the eggs to a nice thick, foamy batter. They are easy to make, delicious with that minty twist that sets them apart. Delightful bites of satiny smooth chocolate flavored with mint, raspberry, or caramel. These Frango mints taste exactly like they did when I first moved to Chicago over 25 years ago. The roasted note is likely to fade at least somewhat with some age, which makes Minted an interesting beer to try fresh, and again in a few weeks. The other morning I met a friend I hadn’t seen in a while for coffee. It is thankfully not liquid dessert, and for that reason, probably won’t wow non-stout drinkers.īut for stout drinkers who double as fans of chocolate and mint, it is one to savor. The taste, fortunately, follows suit.Ī beer nodding to Frango mints can only work through balance, and Minted pulls it off: a silky chocolate-mint note up front that’s never overbearing and gives way to a long, roasty, bittersweet chocolate finish that lingers surprisingly long - as long as the mint. Minted’s aroma is promising: undeniably mint- and chocolate-forward, but restrained by a bold roasty note. I am at once an ideal and doubtful audience: a native Chicagoan with fond Frango-filled memories and a general love for the intersection of mint and chocolate - but with a long-held skepticism of stouts that veer into sugary dessert. “We wanted to focus on the really potent mint oil standing up and fighting with the chocolate and having that be a delicious balance,” Zimmer said.Īnd do Frango and Hop Butcher pull it off? The mint oil is so potent, Zimmer said, less than a gallon was needed for the 90 barrels of beer (which translates to about 2,800 gallons) that will be released this week. Instead, Hop Butcher tweaked an existing stout recipe, dropping the roast character “to prop up the mint,” Zimmer said, and adding ample cacao nibs to even the flavors. Penn said she was open to the idea, but Zimmer said what may have made for a fun stunt would have resulted in a questionable beer due to the fats, sugars and oils in chocolate. Press onto the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie. What the beer does not feature is actual Frango mints. For a point of comparison, Apple’s new iPad measures 240 x 169.5 x 7.5mm and weighs in at 469g. Its one of the best Android tablets there is, and one of the best tablets period, due to its impressive battery life, solid. It has a thick, plastic body that curves to meet the glass front, where you’ll find big bezels around the screen. The Amazon Fire HD 10 is a fantastic all-around tablet. Let’s be honest – the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2017) is plain. It’s a great feature for a budget tablet and it’s getting better all the time thanks to a growing library of skills that offer fun games and integration with all sorts of services. Maybe it’s because we’re used to Alexa with the Echo, but we found ourselves using it quite a lot on the Fire HD 10 (2017), more than we’ve ever used Siri on the iPad, for example. You can toggle the hands-free mode on and off, which is great if you’re concerned about Alexa always listening. If you’re cooking up a storm in the kitchen and want to check a recipe - ask Alexa and get what you need without having to wash up first. Say you’ve propped the Fire HD 10 just out of reach and want to pause the movie action for a quick break - just tell Alexa. We found hands-free commands were much more useful for a tablet. Sadly, it won’t be released in Australia.Ī lot of people still don’t really use the voice assistants that live in their phones, so you might be wondering why the Fire HD 10 (2017) would be any different? With or without ads, the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2017) has no easy-to-recommend competitors at this price point. The good news is that Amazon has shaved some money off the price for this year’s Fire HD 10, and bumped the resolution and performance. Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus review: A good and affordable tablet Tech Amazon’s new 180 tablet is good, but most people should still get an iPad Published Sat, May 29 202110:34 AM EDT Todd. We didn’t much care for the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2015), which cost $230 or £170 and had a terrible screen resolution, sluggish performance, and a plasticky design. Both versions come with a handy microSD card slot for cards of up to 256GB in size. The 64GB version of the Amazon Fire HD 10 (2017) costs $190 or £180. It’s worth noting that you can pay that money at any point in the future to turn them off. If that idea offends you, pay an extra $15 or £10 and you can get the Fire HD 10 (2017) lock screen ad-free. The Fire HD 10 normally starts at $150 or £150 for the model with special offers, which means that you get adverts for content on your lock screen. You can pay $15/£10 extra to get rid of lock screen adverts.Price does fluctuate around sales periods. You can even turn the dispalay into an Echo-style smart speaker and view news reports, see timers and check the weather which is a really nice touch.Amazon Fire HD 10 (2017) price and release date Of course, being an Amazon tablet there's hands-free access to Alexa with the chatty assistant being summoned without needing to tap the screen. The standard Fire HD 10 Plus costs £189 with the Productivity Bundle costing £275 which isn't bad value for money. That means you will be able to enjoy a Windows 10-style experience without the hassle of endless security updates, bug threats, and complicated menus. If that doesn't bother you and you simply want a tablet for a bit of web surfing and shopping on Amazon it's pretty hard to fault the HD 10 Plus.Īlthough those niggles are a bit annoying one thing that has improved on the Fire range are the accessories as you can now add a keyboard case to this tablet which instantly turns it into a mini laptop.Īmazon is even offering a Productivity Bundle which includes a keyboard plus full access to Office 365 and all of its apps, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote, for a whole year. You can't even install Chrome or Gmail on the Fire which is pretty irritating. Amazons Fire HD 10 Plus has great battery life, a good screen and easy access to movies, music and books. This means you are stuck with Amazon's own app marketplace which is fine but simply can't compete with what Google or Apple has to offer. That's because, despite the Fire HD 10 Plus running on Android it can't access the Play Store and all of its millions of applications. The overall performance is pretty good with our only main gripes about the usability coming from the pretty poor speakers which sound horribly tinny and lacking any ounce of bass. The Octa-core processor isn't the fastest but basic tasks can be performed without a hint of a stutter and this model gets a tiny bit of extra RAM to help it cope with more intensive activities. The 10.1-inch full HD screen is good and perfectly adequate for surfing the web and watching the odd movie and boxset on Prime Video.
